Collection & Automation
Have you ever seen the Collection Management door and wondered what goes on behind the scenes?

This is the area of the library where awesome new materials are ordered and made shelf-ready for you to check-out, take home and enjoy!
After materials are ordered...
...a record appears in the catalog. You are now able to place your request before the item is even in the library.
Once materials arrive...
...they are cataloged and processed. You may wonder, "What does that mean?"
Cataloging is when the record in the library catalog is enhanced to provide more access. Author, title and subject information is added to the record which allows multiple searching capabilities. The call number (or shelf location) is assigned so you know where to find the item on the shelf.

Processing is when books are covered with those shiny book jackets. DVDs, CDs, and Audiobooks are placed in heavy-duty cases that hold up in the bookdrop. Barcodes and spine labels (with the shelf location) are placed on the items.

Other things we do behind the scenes are:
- Collection maintenance and inventory
- Mending of well-used library materials
- Readying materials for Friends of the Library Book Sales
- Maintaining computers and library software
- Ongoing maintenance of the library catalog
