Teen volunteers play an important role in the Youth Services department at La Crosse Public Library by helping us with just about everything, from stapling, sorting and stuffing to advising staff on teen programs and materials for our collection. There are a couple of ways that YOU can make a difference…
Do you enjoy helping others? Do you like working with people, especially children? Then please consider being a teen volunteer at La Crosse Public Library this summer! Every summer we accept applications for teen volunteers to work with the Youth Services staff during the summer library programs. Teen volunteers assist with a variety of activities from program sign-up to being that extra pair of hands at our programs. There are two information/registration meetings in May for interested teens (teens only have to attend ONE meeting): Tuesday, May 15 or Tuesday, May 22, both at 6:30 p.m. at the Main Library. If you would like to volunteer but cannot attend either meeting, please email Linda by May 25, 2012.
Join us once a month during the school year for our Teen Advisory Council, otherwise known as TAC. Open to teens only, this group meets to discuss books, brainstorm ideas for programs, help with projects, buy books, and EAT. As always, everything is FREE. For dates, times and locations, check our Library Events Calendar or email Linda.

Teen Volunteer Meetings
Do you enjoy helping others and you like working with children? Then please consider being a teen volunteer at La Crosse Public Library this summer! Teen volunteers assist with a wide variety of activities in relation to the summer library program. Two informational/registration meetings will be held in May: Tuesday, May 15 & Tuesday, May 22, both from 6:30-7 p.m. at the Main Library. Teen Advisory Council

Prom!
Here are a few titles that deal with that classic American teen experience.
24 Girls in 7 Days by Alex Bradley
Jack Grammar, average American senior, has no date to the prom. Or so he thinks. Percy and Natalie, Jack's so-called best friends, post an ad in the classified section of the online version of the school newspaper. They figure it couldn't hurt. After all, there's not much in this world sadder than Jack's love life. Soon Percy and Natalie have assembled a list of girls eager to go to the prom with Jack, including one mysterious girl known only as FancyPants. He has just seven days to meet and date them before he will ask one special girl to the prom.
Prom & Prejudice by Elizabeth Eulberg
For Lizzie Bennett, a music scholarship student at Connecticut's exclusive, girls-only Longbourn Academy, the furor over prom is senseless, but even more puzzling is her attraction to the pompous Will Darcy, best friend of her roommate's boyfriend.
Tessa Masterson Will Go to Prom by Emily Franklin & Brendan Halpin
Feeling humiliated and confused when his best friend Tessa rejects his love and reveals a long-held secret, high school senior Luke must decide if he should stand by Tessa when she invites a female date to the prom, sparking a firestorm of controversy in their small Indiana town.
The Anti-Prom by Abby McDonald
On prom night, Bliss, Jolene, and Meg, students from the same high school who barely know one another, band together to get revenge against Bliss's boyfriend and her best friend, whom she caught together in the limousine they rented.
First Date by Krista McGee
The last thing Addy Davidson wants is to be on a reality TV show where the prize is a prom date with the President's son.
Prom Nights from Hell
In this exciting collection of paranormal tales, best-selling authors take prom mishaps to a whole new level—a truly hellish level. Wardrobe malfunctions and two left feet don't hold a candle to discovering your date is the Grim Reaper—and he isn't here to tell you how hot you look. From angels fighting demons to a twisted take on getting what you wish for, these five stories will entertain better than any DJ in a bad tux can. No corsage or limo rental necessary.
Zombie Queen of Newbury High by Amanda Ashby
While trying to cast a love spell on her date on the eve of the senior prom, Mia inadvertently infects her entire high school class with a virus that will turn them all into zombies.
Speaking of Dancing…
Here are some great dance movies in our Teen DVD collection!
Footloose
Ren MacCormack moves from Boston to the small town of Bomont, where he experiences a heavy dose of culture shock. A few years prior, the community was rocked by a tragic accident that killed five teenagers after a night out. Bomont's councilmen and the beloved Reverend Shaw Moore responded by invoking ordinances that prohibit loud music and dancing. Not one to bow to the status quo, Ren challenges the ban, revitalizes the town, and falls in love with the minister's troubled daughter, Ariel.
Spork
Spork is a thirteen year-old, frizzy-haired outcast who's not afraid to stand out despite the pressures around her to fit in. Luckily, a junior high dance competition provides the perfect opportunity for her unique talents to shine through.
Mao’s Last Dancer
Based on an inspiring true story, this is the fascinating and epic tale of Li Cunxin, a peasant boy from rural China who beats impossible odds to become a world-renowned ballet dancer. Through breathtaking talent and sheer determination, Li makes his way to the United States, but when he falls in love with an American woman, he must risk everything to remain in the land of the free.
Only When I Dance
12-year-old Lil' A found dance to be the perfect antidote for the severe tics he suffered because of a nervous disorder. Now the tics have subsided and he has decided to become the best dancer and choreographer in the whole world.
Planet B-Boy
Weaving between the vivid backdrops of Osaka, Paris, Seoul and Las Vegas, unforgettable images frame the intimate stories of dancers who struggle for their dreams despite being misunderstood by the larger society and even their own families. All the dancers lives collide in Germany where their skills are put to the ultimate test: the "Battle of the Year" finals, with crews from 18 nations vying for the title of world champion.
War Dance
Dominic, Rose, and Nancy are three children whose families have been torn apart, their homes destroyed, their innocence lost, and who currently reside in a displaced persons camp in Patongo. These children attend a school where they can momentarily forget the brutal realities of their lives, as they participate in music, song and dance. When they are invited to compete in an annual music and dance festival in their nation's capitol, their historic journey is also an opportunity to regain a part of their childhood and to taste victory for the first time.
